2024 paris olympics

A Historic Moment for New Zealand Muaythai

We proudly celebrated Ishtar Mackey-Huriwai’s selection to represent Aotearoa New Zealand in Muaythai’s historic debut as a demonstration sport at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Representing her Ngāti Porou heritage and hailing from Tairāwhiti, Gisborne, Ishtar stood as a powerful embodiment of strength, culture, and resilience. With the mana of her tīpuna behind her, she entered the ring carrying not only her personal aspirations but the dreams of a nation.A Historic Moment for New Zealand Muaythai.

This 2024 landmark event, marked a major milestone for Muaythai on the global stage AND signified the realisation of a long-held vision by the New Zealand Muaythai Federation, whose decades of dedication led to this moment.

Ishtar’s journey was shaped by the unwavering support of Rangataua o Aotearoa, Steve Pipe Strength & Conditioning, Ihirangi Heke, and the unique cardio training methods of Mātaiao, rooted in traditional environmental knowledge. Her achievements reflected not only personal excellence but a collective victory for our NZ Black Gloves team and for all future Muaythai athletes in Aotearoa.

"No Ngāti Porou au and our Iwi has a long line of tīpuna wahine who lead our hapū. The kaha that they had is in me and the way I will portray this mana is through Muaythai. I know when I enter the ring, I have my tīpuna and my whānau behind me.

Ahakoa he kotahi he manomano - This opportunity will not only benefit me but all those in our Muaythai community aspiring to participate in the Olympic Games."
